Production Manager
Portland, Maine (Canco Road) • Flexible Hours & Schedule
About Us
Maine Flag Company is Maine’s only nautical flagmaker and the only producer of the original 1901 Maine flag, made entirely in Maine. We’re a small, tight-knit team doing work we’re genuinely proud of — and we’re looking for someone who feels the same way to lead our production operations.
The Role
A hands-on leadership position for a skilled sewist who’s also a strong organizer and communicator. You’ll oversee daily production, manage a small team, and keep projects moving from raw materials to finished product, reporting directly to the President & CEO and largely running the shop independently.
What You’ll Do
• Operate a variety of commercial and industrial sewing machines and laser cutters
• Apply core techniques including hems, appliqué, double-needle and zigzag
• Perform basic machine maintenance and troubleshooting
• Estimate and plan workload across multiple concurrent projects
• Supervise and support 1–2 production staff
• Monitor inventory and place reorders for raw materials and finished goods
• Communicate clearly and proactively with ownership on production status
What We’re Looking For
We’re not checking boxes — we’re looking for the right person. If you can demonstrate the skills and have the drive, we want to talk to you, whether that experience came from a production floor, a home studio, or anywhere in between.
The ideal candidate is self-directed and takes ownership. You see what needs to get done and do it without being asked. You manage your time well, stay organized under competing demands, and communicate proactively when things shift.
You’re not afraid of technology and are good with machinery and business management systems (we use Odoo). You’re comfortable leading others without micromanaging, and you bring a problem-solving mindset to the machines, the workflow, and the team — always thinking about how to do things better and faster. We recognize that efficiency looks different for everyone, but we need the best method for the job and count on you to find it without compromising quality.
A genuine appreciation for craft and made-in-Maine work is a big plus.
Working Conditions
Flexible structure — full-time or part-time, hourly or salaried with some work able to be done remotely. We’ll work with the right candidate to define an arrangement that works for all of us. Some standard hours are required, but we value autonomy and trust you to get the work done.
Compensation
Competitive and negotiable based on experience and working arrangement.
